I was a violent drunk who had Bloody Marys for breakfast, admits David Walliams’ fiancé Lara Stone
The fiancé of comic David Walliams has spoken openly about how her life spiralled out of control due to her drinking.
Lara Stone, 26, has been sober for 10 months now after a stint in rehab.
But the catwalk model admitted that she was a ‘violent drunk’ who would try and pick fights with doormen, boyfriends, anyone.
And she told how she used to carry drinks around in her bag because she woke up with the shakes so often.
Stone became engaged to Little Britain star Walliams in January after a whirlwind four-month romance.
But not long previously she had felt the need to check herself into a South African rehab clinic after realising her drinking was out of hand.
Speaking about the battle with the booze to a U.S. fashion magazine, Interview, in which she posed in a number of explicit shots, Stone said: ‘The drinking was getting way out of control. I just didn’t recognise myself any more. I didn’t know what I was doing or where I was.
‘I always had to have some drinks with me in my bag. Just waking up shaking and then having Bloody Marys on your own, first thing in the morning – I started to feel really pathetic about it.
‘So I was like, “I can’t live like this.” It was just this really awful feeling of becoming a totally different person and not being able to control it at all.
‘Then I tried to not drink, but that didn’t work. So I figured I should just go to rehab.
‘Also, with this job, always travelling on the plane and everything, I thought it would be really difficult to quit on my own because you’re always in situations where it’s acceptable to have drinks.’
Stone, who has recently been chosen to be the new ‘face’ of Giorgio Armani, said she searched online to find a rehab centre to check into.
‘I Googled a bunch of places, and I found this place that I went to in Cape Town, South Africa, called Stepping Stones. I stayed there for a month. It was really difficult-lots of talking and crying.’
Stone said she has been sober for the last 10 months, adding: ‘It was the best thing I’ve done in my entire life. I’m so happy I did that.’
The model, who has a English father and Dutch mother, said she would often turn violent when drunk.
‘I used to love slapping people in the face when I was drunk,’ she said.
‘I thought it was really funny, so I did pick fights with doormen and bouncers. Ex boyfriends. But nobody ever punched me back.’
Stone also spoke about the pressure to be thin in the interview with fashion designer Marc Jacobs for the U.S. magazine Interview.
Stone is considered a rarity on the catwalk as she is curvaceous and showed off her naked body in the latest issue of the magazine. But she admitted she went on crash diets to try and look like other waif like models.
Asked how she felt about the scrutiny of her body, she said: ‘I was pretty self-conscious about it a few months ago because everybody kept going on like, “Oh, she’s so curvy!” and “She’s a plus-size model!” and this and that.
‘It’s all people would talk about-how I’m not very skinny. For a while, it made me pretty upset and I got a bit obsessive about it.
‘I did a bunch of dieting and exercising and everything. I was losing weight, but I was still much bigger than everybody else.
‘I didn’t really see the point of making myself crazy anymore, so I kind of toned it down a little bit.’
Walliams, 38, proposed to Stone after her parents gave their blessing.
