Vestiaire Collective announces ban on fast Fashion
Pre-owned luxury and designer fashion platform Vestiaire Collective has announced a ban on fast fashion from its platform.
The announcement which came into effect from Black Friday is part of its mission to fight fashion waste over the next 3 years. The list of brands impacted by the move includes Asos, Atmosphere, Boohoo, Burton, Cider, Coast, Dorothy Perkins, Fashion Nova, Karen Millen, Miss Selfridge, Missguided, Na-kd, Nasty Gal, Oasis, Pretty Little Thing, Shein, Tezenis, Topman, Topshop (and collaborations) and Warehouse.
According to the Paris-based second-hand fashion giant Fast fashion is one of the biggest challenges facing the industry today, and one of the biggest polluters in the world. ‘Fast fashion has no value, and even less in resale. We’ve taken this step because we don’t want to be complicit in this industry which has a tremendous environmental and social impact. The current system encourages overproduction and overconsumption of low-quality items and generates huge amounts of fashion waste,’ Vestiaire Collective’s Chief Impact Officer Dounia Wone said in a statement.
By saying no to fast fashion and choosing second-hand instead, Vestaire Collective is looking to not be part of an outdated, exploitative system and change the fashion industry for the better. It will also be partnering with The Or Foundation to fight fashion waste.
