Demna Gvasalia steps down from Vetements
Demna Gvasalia is stepping down from Vetements the brand he co-founded five years ago.
The 38-year-old Georgian-German designer is known for creating a fashion revolution with the brands’ oversized and voluminous aesthetic soon becoming mainstay. The label’s success was further amplified when Kanye West wore its hoodies which in turn led to West collaborating with Demna on the first few seasons of his Yeezy line.
‘I started Vetements because I was bored of fashion, and against all odds fashion did change once and forever since Vetements appeared,’ Demna told WWD. ‘So I feel that I have accomplished my mission of a conceptualist and design innovator. Vetements has matured into a company that can evolve its creative heritage into a new chapter on its own.’
‘Vetements has always been a collective of creative minds, and we’ll continue to explore boundaries, respecting the codes and original values of the brand, and supporting genuine creativity and talent,’ Guram Gvasalia, co-founder of the brand and brother of Demna Gvasalia said in a statement.
Demna who has been creative director at Balenciaga since 2015 will present its spring 2020 show in Paris later this month. As to what extent the demands of the dual role contributed to his departure from Vetements is not known.
