Model of the Week: Marjan Jonkman

Each week, we take the time to highlight one of our favorite emerging models. Last week, we profiled Danish beauty Line Brems this week we’ve decided to feature Marjan Jonkman.
The 24-year-old (who ranks 145 on the IFDAQ Global Fashion Model List) grew up in a small town in the north, Sint Nicolaasga in Friesland Maryan and studied European language and culture at the University of Groningen. Her foray into fashion took place when she participated in a fashion show organized in her school, and her photos ended up on social media. An agent discovered it on Facebook and she signed her first contract within a few months.
Securing an exclusive debut at Saint Laurent is perhaps the holy grail for any up-and-coming model. Maryan Jonkman launched her career with just that, making her debut walking for Saint Laurent’s Spring/Summer 2015 collection.
Her platinum blonde hair, blue eyes, and androgynous look caught the eye of Hedi Slimane who signed her ‘exclusive’ for Saint Lauren which meant that she could not run any other shows at the time. A week later she together with the Dutch model Kiki Willems was also booked for the Spring / Summer 2015 campaign of the fashion house.
Since that first casting, she has worked with almost all major fashion names and it’s been a whirlwind of catwalks and editorials for top fashion magazines. During 2016 Fashion Week she walked a total of 60 shows and opened the No. 21 show in Milan with her final catwalk being for Kenzo in Paris. She is also a favorite of Alessandro Michele and has worked with high-end photographers like Mario Testino.
Despite her incredible success on the catwalk, Maryan is fun, whimsical and a down-to-earth Frisian. With a penchant for rock’n’roll, she considers Doutzen Kroes her idol and Heidi Slimane her favorite Designer.
At the rate Maryan is going, 2019 will also be a major year for her.
