Newsmaker Of The Week: Anthony Vaccarello
Our newsmaker this week is none other than Anthony Vaccarello.
The 36 year-old Italian-Belgian fashion designer was announced last week as the new designer of Saint Laurent. He left his previous role at Versus Versace which he held since January 2015.
Born on September 4, 1982 in Brussels to Italian parents, Vaccarello graduated fromm La Cambre the Belgian design school, where he studied sculpture. In 2006 he graduated with an honors degree and also presented his graduate collection at the Hyeres International Festival of Fashion and Photography, where he won first place and caught the attention of Karl Lagerfeld. He went on to work for Lagerfeld at Fendi as designer for the fashion house’s fur line for two years.
In 2009 he struck out with his own label and presented his first eponymous ready-to-wear collection which was immediately praised by critics for the purity and subtlety. In 2011, his designs won the coveted Association Nationale pour le Developpement des Arts de la Mode (ANDAM) award, France’s equivalent of the CFDA, following which in 2012 he launched two collections for La Redoute.
Vaccarello then went on to work with Versus Versace where he designed a capsule collection which debuted during New York Fashion Week in September 2014. Known for his revealing, over-the-top sexy looks favored by Jennifer Lopez, Karlie Kloss, Anja Rubick, Vaccarello’s designs are inspired by the 80s and evolve between structure and weightlessness, between radicalism and sex appeal.
As he takes helm at Saint Laurent, Vaccarello will present his first collection for Yves Saint Laurent in October, during the spring 2017 shows of Paris Fashion Week.
