Newsmaker Of The Week: Ruby Rose
Our newsmaker this week is Model, DJ, and actor Ruby Rose.
The 29 year old Australian who shot to fame after landing the role of inmate Stella in the Netflix series ‘Orange is the New Black’ was recently awarded the 2015 Woman of the Year by GQ Australia.
Rose began her modeling career in 2002 when she joined a model search by Australian teen magazine ‘Girlfriend’ and came in second to Catherine McNeil. She left her acting studies behind becoming an MTV VJ for TRL in Australia, and in July 2009, began hosting The 7pm Project, a news talk show in Australia.
Rose came out as a lesbian at just 12 years old, and has admitted to being the victim of severe bullying while in high school. In 2008, she was rumored to be dating Jessica Origliasso from The Veronicas. She also dated America’s Next Top Model contestant Lola Van Vorst, and was engaged to Lyndsey Anne McMillan, but they broke things off in 2009.
In 2010, she got engaged to supermodel Catherine McNeil but they called it off later that year. As of June 2015, she is engaged to Phoebe Dahl, a clothing designer and the granddaughter of the children’s-book author Roald Dahl. They were engaged in March 2014, when Phoebe popped the question to Rose. In 2008 and 2009, Rose was chosen as one of the 25 Most Influential Gay and Lesbian Australians by Same Same, an Australian online gay and lesbian community.
In 2010, Rose hosted Asutralia’s version of Ultimate School Musical and became a correspondent for the Winter Olympics in 2010. Ruby also has a fashion line and is the face of Maybelline New York in Australia. Additionally, she released the song “Guilty Pleasure” in 2012. She also wrote, produced and starred in a five minute short film titled “Break Free” on gender identity. It went viral on social media and helped get her noticed by casting agents.
Rose moved to America to become an actress and hosted the MTV Europe Music Awards in Milan last month alongside Ed Sheeran.
