Highlights from the 2015 Glamour Women of the Year Awards
Glamour’s 25th annual Women of the Year Awards celebrating women’s influence and achievements in fashion, politics, business, and more was held on the evening of November 9 at Carnegie Hall in New York City. Amy Schumer opened the awards ceremony, which also celebrated past Women of the Year honorees including Madeleine Albright, Samantha Power, Serena Williams, and Billie Jean King and featured a star-studded list of presenters and musical guests. Reese Witherspoon: The Hollywood Hero
The Oscar-winning actress was honored for co-founding the Pacific Standard production company that creates films with female protagonists. Witherspoon is working towards redefining the film industry by casting women the main characters. Pacific Standard’s first two films have earned more than $400 million at the box office.
Victoria Beckham: The Fashion Force
The fashion designer was being recognized for her career and work as an international goodwill ambassador for UNAIDS and other philanthropy. Beckham’s award was handed by her son Brooklyn Beckham.
Misty Copeland: The Showstopper
The principal dancer at American Ballet Theatre in June became the first African American ballerina to gain the top title at the prestigious dance company. The incredible Lupita Nyong’o presented Copeland’s award.
Elizabeth Holmes: The Entrepreneur
The 31-year-old businesswoman left Stanford University and founded Theranos – a revolutionary blood testing system in 2003 with an estimated net worth of $4.5 billion that serves to make healthcare affordable for everyone.
Caitlyn Jenner: The Transgender Champion
The 65-year-old Olympic hero turned reality star was recognized for her role as a transgender role model.
Cecile Richards: The Health Advocate
The president of Planned Parenthood Federation of America was recognized for her leadership of the non-profit organization and ensuring that all women can have access to reproductive health services such as birth control, STD testing, emergency contraception.
Team USA: Game Changers
The US Women’s National Soccer Team was honoured for winning the FIFA Women’s World Cup in June and defaeting the U.S. Men’s Soccer Team with the most viewership in American soccer television.
Charleston Strong: The Peacemakers
Nadine Collier, Polly Sheppard, Alana Simmons, Bethane Middleton-Brown, and Felicia Sanders, all lost all lost loved ones at the shooting at Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Charleston, South Carolina and were recognized for seeking peaceful solutions.
