Amy Powney exits Mother of Pearl to launch new womenswear brand Akyn
Mother of Pearl Creative director Amy Powney has stepped down after more than 11 years with the luxury womenswear brand.
‘After 20 years at the helm, Amy Powney is stepping down as Mother of Pearl’s creative director to launch an exciting new contemporary womenswear brand and Mother of Pearl is closing,’ the brand said in an email to Mother of Pearl customers.
Powney had joined Mother of Pearl in 2006 as a studio assistant and in 2013 took on the position of creative director. During her tenure, she took part in the documentary ‘Fashion Reimagined’ to champion transparency, responsible production, and sustainability. In 2017, she won the BFC/Vogue Fashion Fund, which she used to create a fully traceable collection, from farm to finished garment.
Powney is set to launch her own womenswear brand Akyn in May, a purpose-driven brand grounded in elevated design and sustainability.
‘As creative director and partner of Akyn, Amy will be able to use her voice and expertise on a wider scale, creating deeper impact and striving for continued and meaningful change within the industry,‘ the brand said in a statement.
