Helmut Lang appoints Peter Do as Creative Director
Vietnamese-American designer Peter Do has been appointed creative director for the Helmut Lang brand.
Effective May 15, 2023, he will oversee the brand’s women’s and men’s collections and will report directly to Dinesh Tandon, chief executive officer of Helmut Lang. He will present his debut collection for Helmut Lang, during New York Fashion Week’s Spring/Summer 2024 shows in September.
Do will be based in New York working out of Helmut Lang’s studio located in the Fast Retailing’s Design and Innovation Center there. He will also continue to helm his own eponymous brand which he launched in 2018.
‘We are thrilled to have Peter Do join Helmut Lang as creative director. His clear and innovative approach to design very much aligns with the brand’s ethos and heritage. His experience with luxury fashion houses and his acclaimed eponymous label make him a natural choice for this role,’ said Tandon.
‘No one embodied radical thinking more definitively than Helmut Lang. It is my deep honor to be entrusted with ushering in the next chapter of Helmut Lang’s legacy. I am excited to learn from the foundations this house stands on and to continue creating new, energetic clothes that inspire people to challenge their understanding of what is possible when it comes to expressing their individuality,’ Do said in a statement
The Helmut Lang brand was founded in 1986 by the self-taught Austrian designer, and has had several creative directors since Lang himself left in 2005 to work as an artist. The brand was revived in 2007 when it was acquired by Link Theory Holdings, a subsidiary of Prada Group’s Fast Retailing which also owns Uniqlo, Theory, J Brand, Comptoir des Cotonniers, and Princesse Tam-Tam, among others, under its umbrella.
Design duo Michael and Nicole Colovos served as its creative directors until 2014 which was followed by an anonymous in-house design team. Later Isabella Burley, then editor-in-chief of Dazed, was hired as ‘editor-in-residence’ who brought on Shayne Oliver in 2017 to design her Spring/Summer 2018 collection. Thereafter, Mark Thomas and Thomas Cawson briefly took over in 2019, and left after the Spring/Summer 2020 season. Since then, the brand has been designed by a studio team.
Born in Bien Hoa, Vietnam, Do studied fashion design at the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York and received the 2014 LVMH Graduate Prize. After graduating from Phoebe Philo’s atelier, he launched his eponymous brand in New York in 2018. He was nominated for three CFDA Awards and was a finalist for the 2020 LVMH Prize.
