The Palais Galliera to reopen with an exhibition dedicated to Gabrielle Chanel

Palais Galliera Gabrielle Chanel Fashion Manifesto

The Palais Galliera the City of Paris Fashion Museum will reopen its doors on October 1 with a retrospective dedicated to Gabrielle Chanel.

The museum had closed its doors in July 2018 due to refurbishment work that saw a large-scale renovation campaign that enabled it to double its exhibition space. The result is the creation of new exhibition galleries named Salles Gabrielle Chanel, The Gabrielle Chanel Rooms, an expanded range of services, including a bookstore-boutique, an educational workshop, and an open-air tea room. Now after a two-year wait, the must-see destination for fashion lovers will recommence with an invitation to discover a universe and a style that are truly timeless.

Titled ‘Gabrielle Chanel, Fashion Manifesto’ the exhibition conceived by Miren Arzalluz has been organized with the support of Chanel and is the first retrospective in Paris of the unique and remarkable fashion designer. Covering an area of nearly 1500 m2 it comprises of more than 350 pieces from the 1910s up to 1971 taken from the Palais Galliera collections and Patrimoine de Chanel, from international museums, including The Victoria and Albert Museum in London, the De Young Museum in San Francisco, the Museo de la Moda in Santiago de Chile, the MoMu in Antwerp…, as well as from private collections.

The exhibition is divided into two parts: the first part is chronological and recounts Gabrielle Chanel’s early beginnings with a few emblematic pieces, the development of her chic style of the 1930s, the closure of the house at 31 rue Cambon during World War II, the arrival of Christian Dior and the New Look and her return to couture in 1954 reaffirming her fashion manifesto. There is also a section dedicated entirely to N 5 which was created in 1921 and ten photo portraits of Coco that show the extent to which the couturiere herself was the embodiment of her brand.

The second part of the exhibition is themed and presents other iconic items with which Chanel made her name: the braided tweed suit, the two-tone pump, the 2.55 quilted bag, and the fine and costume jewelry that became inseparable from the silhouette of ‘Madame Chanel’.

The Gabrielle Chanel, Fashion Manifesto exhibition will run from October 1 2020 to March 14, 2021, at the Palais Galliera 10 Avenue Pierre 1er de Serbie, 75016 Paris.
