Gucci launches Gender-Neutral Shopping Section ‘Gucci MX’
Italian fashion house Gucci has launched a gender-neutral section on its website to make its shopping experience more inclusive.
Titled ‘Gucci MX’ the new section celebrates self-expression in the name of all gender equality. According to the Gucci MX webpage, ‘the new section is set out to deconstruct preconceived binaries and question how these concepts relate to our bodies. The House’s collections emphasize the dissolving lines of the gender divide in the name of self-expression. Playing with the constructive nature of gender, the MX project underlines the performative nature of what we wear, presenting masculinity and feminity as relative concepts.’
Gucci MX presents a curated selection of items across categories and collections by dividing products into four categories: Ready to Wear, Handbags and Luggage, Shoes, and Accessories (the sizes of which are also gender-neutral). Gucci says it will add new products to the Gucci MX category every season, in addition to their regular categories for men and women on their website. A standout item from Gucci MX is the iconic Jackie 1961 handbag popularized by Jackie Kennedy in the 1960s. It was reintroduced during the men’s FW20 show with a genderless attitude and is now available in three sizes.
The launch of Gucci’s MX section is celebrated by artist Melek Zertal in a specially commissioned comic strip ahead of the September launch of Issue 4 of Frankenstein Magazine in which all the characters in the illustrations wear pieces from MX.
Gucci’s latest venture from creative director Alessandro Michele was born as part of a 5-year creative vision and once again proves that it is innovative and progressive as possible. The bold and groundbreaking step of embracing gender fluidity and inclusivity is the first in the luxury fashion world and sets a good example for the creative industry. Part of a new initiative it defies traditional stereotypes, celebrating liberty and self-expression. Hopefully, Gucci’s trailblazing choice will encourage other luxury brands to follow suit.
