Taschen celebrates Naomi Campbell’s career in new coffee table book
Legendary Supermodel Naomi Campbell who turned 50 in May is the subject of a new book released by German publisher Taschen Verlag that takes a look back at her incredible career.
Appropriately titled ‘Naomi’ the two-volume 522-page portfolio is an updated release which was first published as a signed Collector’s Edition in 2013 of only 1,000 copies. The new unlimited XL edition takes a look back at the entrepreneur, activist, and provocateur’s greatest moments caught on camera- photographs by Mert Alas and Marcus Piggott, Richard Avedon, Anton Corbijn, Patrick Demarchelier, Steven Meisel, Helmut Newton, Herb Ritts, Paolo Roversi, Mario Testino, Ellen von Unwerth, and Bruce Weber, including unforgettable shots by Peter Lindbergh for Italian Vogue.
The autobiographical volume tells of her childhood, her rise to become a supermodel and the most important moments and people in her career: starting with her family; her first shootings; her encounters with designers and editors such as Grace Coddington, Azzedine Alaia or Gianni Versace, her decades of friendships with other models like Kate Moss; as well as her meetings with the most important figures of our time such as Nelson Mandela and Michelle Obama.
Since her discovery by Beth Boldt who saw her supermodel potential when she was 15, Campbell has actually accomplished everything that can be achieved as a model. She was the first black model to appear on the cover of French Vogue and the US magazine Time. ‘I never planned to be a model. I hadn’t even thought about it. When I was a teenager I just loved dancing and I was happy to be able to go to drama school. It was only when I met Beth Boldt, head of the Synchro Agency, that I had the idea of modeling for the first time,’ she says.
Priced at 100 Euros the Naomi Campbell coffee table book is available at taschen.com.
