Dior presents its Haute Couture Collection in the form of a Film
With the current Coronavirus Pandemic having had a profound impact on the Fashion Industry, several fashion houses have chosen to present their collections digitally.
French Fashion house Dior presented its Autumn-Winter 2020-2021 by Maria Grazia Chiuri in the form of an exclusive film directed by Italian filmmaker Matteo Garrone and Music by composer and conductor Paolo Buonvino. Titled ‘Le Mythe Dior’ the film features a cast of fantastical characters, 37 mini dressmaker mannequins are brought to life as dream-inducing creations.
Through the course of the film, viewers are taken on a journey of discovery through a mythical world full of nymphs floating in water, a mermaid, Narcissus, a statue that comes to life, and even a satyr burst. The Atelier is an enchanted place where a trunk of shrunken clothes is transformed into real garments. The trunk embodying 30 Avenue Montaigne echoes the Theatre de la Mode, an exhibition of styles by French couturiers that traveled between Europe and America right after World War II. Bringing to life the collection of imaginative complexity, the film evokes the inspirations permeating the collection and arouses enchantment.
‘The concept of film, as a work of art and an artistic medium, has always captivated me; I have often thought of experimenting with it in order to reproduce the unique atmosphere of haute couture. Cinema is an art that is both creative and artisanal, a work of authorship and a chorale. It’s very similar to fashion’s savoir-faire,’ said Chiuri of the film.
In the unprecedented period that has driven the fashion industry to reinvent itself, Chiuri was inspired by the works of women Surrealist artists such as Lee Miller, Dorothea Tanning, Leonora Carrington, Dora Maar, and Jacqueline Lamba. The new collection pays tribute to the history of haute couture, Surrealism, and Dior’s savoir-faire.
‘Surrealist images manage to make visible what is in itself invisible. I’m interested in mystery and magic, which are also a way of exorcising uncertainty about the future,’ said Maria Grazia Chiuri of the collection.
