Gigi Hadid and Alexander Wang star in the Pirelli calendar 2019

The 46th edition of the Pirelli calendar has been released and features big names from the art and fashion world.

Lensed by Scottish photographer Albert Watson, the black and white photographs from January to December in 16:9 format tells the stories of fictional women who dream themselves out of their respective realities.

While in the early years the Pirelli calendar was full of women, this year only four women were cast; model Gigi Hadid, ballet dancer Misty Copeland, actress Julia Garner and model Laetitia Casta. The men this year are ballet dancers Calvin Royal III, Sergei Polunin and fashion designer Alexander Wang.

Gigi plays a character who has separated from her partner, lives alone in a glass tower and has Wang as her only confidant, while Garner, moonlights as a botanical photographer and Caster as a sculptor and artist.

According to Watson, he wanted a new perspective so that each piece was not just a portrait of someone but more like a still from a movie. The most important thing for him was that he portrayed women in a positive way.
