Paris to name street after French fashion designer Sonia Rykiel
Sonia Rykiel will have a street in Paris named after her.
The French fashion designer who died in 2014 at the age of 86 is the first to receive such an honor. The event coincides with the house’s 50th anniversary which will take place on September 29th on the Left Bank street in the neighborhood of Boulevard Raspail.
Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo will unveil the new plaque ‘Allee Sonia Rykiel’ which lies between the Rue du Cherche-Midi and the Rue de Rennes a stone’s throw from where Rykiel lived and worked.
The naming is the result of the efforts of Nathalie Rykiel daughter of Rykiel, who wanted a permanent commemoration to her mother in the city.
‘I absolutely wanted a place in Paris on the Left Bank to bear Sonia’s name. It felt like something important, symbolic, that reflected who she was, and City Hall was extremely supportive of the idea,’ Rykiel told WWD. ‘What’s beautiful is that it ties her name to Paris forever.’
