H & M launches first Conscious Exclusive autumn collection
H & M is launching its first sustainable Fall/Winter collection. The label which is known for creating an exclusive Conscious Capsule Collection every year, has this time extended it to the FW season.
The designers looked for inspiration in ancient tapestry, in order to discover new textile techniques and material innovations. The new collection consists of womenswear clothing, lingerie, shoes, and accessories and introduces recycled cashmere and velvet made from recycled polyester. Overall the collection merges the life and journey of lost historical artifacts with the latest in sustainable fabric innovation.
Also used are remnants of ECONYL from previous collections, a nylon fiber that is 100% made from recycled fishing nets. The different pieces in the collection used materials such as organic cotton, Tencel and recycled polyester. Shoes were made of recycled plastic, a coat of recycled wool and a sequin jacket with floral print of PET bottles.
‘We are absolutely thrilled to be launching a Fall/Winter Conscious Exclusive collection for the first time. It started with a desire to create a statement coat in a sustainable material that could be worn for both special occasions and day-to-day life, but then evolved into something more substantial by merging the journey of historical artifacts with a modern design sensibility,’ said Ann-Sofie Johansson, Creative Advisor at H&M.
‘There is a wonderful range of sustainable fabrics in this collection, like recycled cashmere, the new velvet made from recycled polyester, as well as the use of leftover ECONYL from the H&M Conscious Exclusive S/S 2018 collection. The quality and textures not only complement the designs but highlight the fabric innovation that H&M is closely involved with. The velvet, for instance, has taken years to develop to create a high enough quality that we were happy with,’ added Cecilia Brannsten, Environmental Sustainability Manager at H&M group.
The Conscious Exclusive Fall / Winter 2018 collection will be available exclusively online from September 27 via the H & M webshop.
