Chanel to release Restored Version of Sixties Film ‘Last Year at Marienbad’
Chanel will be releasing a newly restored version of the movie ‘Last Year at Marienbad’ as well as its soundtrack in collaboration with production company Studiocanal.
The cult classic directed by Alain Resnais and starring Delphine Seyrig was released in 1961 and had dresses designed by Coco Chanel. Coco herself dressed Delphine Seyrig for the movie in a series of costumes that were elegant and timeless, reminiscent of the film’s glorious 1920s. Of all of the outfits, an LBD became the standout and was dubbed as the ‘Marienbad Dress’.
The film was considered revolutionary at the time of its release, not just for its story but also in terms of aesthetics. Seyrig plays a woman who meets a man who insists that they had met at the same place one year earlier, and with whom she had an affair.
The remastered version of the movie will be screened at the Venice Film Festival in late August in the “Classic Film” category – the very same place Resnais was awarded the Golden Lion some 60 years ago. It will later be screened in France from September 19, England from September 17 and Germany from September 20.
