Iris van Herpen designs costumes for the Anvers Opera
Dutch fashion designer Iris van Herpen has revealed new costumes for the latest ballet at the Anvers Opera.
The 20 designs consist of silk, wool and leather as well as 3D printing and will be shown in the opera dance production ‘Pelleas et Melisande’ composed by Claude Debussy. In addition, she also used special materials, which she fixed to an invisible tulle with a laser as well as dance suits, made of rubber.
Van Herpen was inspired by the story and the music, as well as science, theories of parallel universes, the subjectivity of time and how emotions can travel universally through the ages.
Pelleas et Melisande is Debussy’s only completed opera and is a romantic triangle that takes place in an imaginary kingdom between two half brothers and a girl. It is directed and choreographed by Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui and Damien Jalet, while set design and visual concept was created by Marina Abramovic. Together, the new production explores the potential to visually capture the connections between what is profoundly human and universally metaphysical.
For Iris van Herpen, the collaboration with the Antwerp Opera follows on after she presented her Spring/Summer 2018 collection on January 22 at Paris Couture Week.
