Miu Miu forced to recall clothing over Star of David backlash
Miu Miu has been forced to pull a number of pieces from their pre-autumn/winter 2017 collection following controversy over star motifs that is featured on the designs and the Star of David.
The Milan-based sister label of Prada witnessed an uproar when comparisons were drawn by blogger ‘Jewish Chick’ between a yellow five-point star bearing the name John inside it and the Star of David patches that Jews were forced to wear during the Holocaust.
The offending pieces from its pre-autumn/winter 2017 collection included a dress, a denim skirt and a denim jacket. The store the dress was displayed in, Hotel Renfrew, quickly stopped stocking the collection.
Miu Miu was quick to issue an apology explaining they would be removing the ‘offending items’ immediately. ‘It was not Miu Miu’s intent in any way to make any political or religious statement, and we apologize for any offence that may have been taken,’ spokeswoman Preia Narendra said in a statement to Jewish Chick and the World Jewish Congress. ‘Kindly note that effective immediately these items will be removed from the collection.’
The World Jewish Congress, also released a statement saying, ‘The World Jewish Congress commends Miu Miu and its parent company Prada on its swift attention and action to the concerns we raised regarding the use of the yellow star on its clothing items. At this critical time, when anti-Semitism and bigotry are rearing their heads in the public sphere, we must continue to exercise caution and show sensitivity in every sphere and sector.’
This is not the first time that Miu Miu has been the subject of controversy. In 2011, it came under fire for its Autumn/Winter 2011 campaign advertisement starring actress Hailey Steinfeld, who was then 14 years old. In 2015, the British Advertising Authority banned one of its Ads Spring/Summer 2015 campaign ad featuring 22-year old actress Mia Goth on grounds that it was ‘Sexualizing a Child’.
