Alexander McQueen accused of plagiarism
Alexander McQueen is under fire.
The British fashion house has been accused by the owners of Greencroft Shetland, a Scottish garden company, for allegedly copying one of their best-known products for its Spring / Summer 2017 and Spring / Summer 2018 collection.
According to Luke and Kate Holt, the founders and operators of Greencroft Shetland, Alexander McQueen’s employees had been in their plant shop to take pictures of a red doored planter. They further believe that the London-based brand incorporated the same image into the lining of a coat in its SS 2018 menswear collection, which was showed during Paris Fashion Week in June.
‘Our designs have been exploited to show off another designer’s products. They have used the rugs in the linings of coats, and so, they have profited directly from our product,’ the Holts told The Fashion Law.
Meanwhile, a representative for Alexander McQueen gave a statement saying, ‘We confirm that an image derived from a Greencroft planter appeared as part of a rug which was the backdrop to a fashion show in 2016. The reverse of the rug – in effect, an abstract design – was used for a coat in the men’s S/S 2018 show. However, we do not agree that this use is an infringement of rights in the planter.’
However, the Holts won’t be pursuing legal action as they do not have the resources to do so, being a two-person team. What they are hoping from Alexander McQueen is an apology, credit for the design and a goodwill payment.
