Miranda Kerr’s Nude Harper’s Bazaar Cover Gets Banned In Australia
Miranda Kerr’s Jan/Feb issue of Harper’s Bazaar Australia were pulled from shelves by Australian supermarket chain Coles after it was deemed ‘inappropriate’. The cover shot by renowned fashion photographer Steven Chee features Kerr standing in a pair of stilettos, covering her naked breasts with her arm.
‘In response to feedback from our customers, many of whom shop with their children, we removed the magazine from sale earlier this week.’ said a Cole’s spokesperson. According to WWD approximately 3,000 copies of the issue were removed from Coles’s 776 locations throughout Australia.
Harper’s Bazaar Australia editor-in-Chief Kellie Hush said she was disappointed about the decision. ‘I respect that people have different opinions but I was really disappointed to hear Coles made the decision to pull the Miranda Kerr issue off shelves,’ Hush said in a statement. ‘The cover is a beautiful artistic image taken by one of Australia’s best photographers, Steven Chee, and I stand by that. I have had so much positive feedback from around the globe it is a shame Coles do not also recognize the artistic integrity of this image.’
Meanwhile Kerr’s management fired back at Coles with her manager Annie Kelly, questioning the motives of the supermarket’s censorship. ‘There have been numerous examples of similar covers sold without restriction that celebrate and support women and this is no different,’ Kelly said. ‘They seem to have used it to get publicity during the busiest trading time of the year.’
