Newsmaker of the week : Hilary Rhoda
Our Newsmaker this week is Victoria’s Secret model and star of Chopard’s ‘Imperiale’ campaign, Hilary Rhoda.
The 28 year old burst on to the fashion scene as a fresh-faced teen more than a decade ago and has come a long way transitioning to a globe-trotting top model. As a child, she dreamed of landing a role on All That, a children’s comedy-sketch show that aired on Nickelodeon. Hailing from suburban Chevy Chase, Maryland, from the early age of 10 Rhoda drew comparisons to Brooke Shields because of her all American looks.
Rhoda was an avid lover of sports playing soccer, basketball, swimming, lacrosse and field hockey. At 15, she attended an open call to meet with modeling scouts in Washington, D.C. and later signed with a New York City agency. As more jobs followed, she move to New York in 2005 to pursue a career in modelling and got started at a time when the names of the moment were Gisele Bundchen, Alessandra Ambrosio and Natalia Vodianova.
She landed her first campaign for Hollister with Bruce Weber but her big break came during the Paris Spring/Summer 2006 shows. Rhoda became the new ‘It Girl’ on the block when she was handpicked by Balenciaga’s Nicolas Ghesquiere to walk in his show.
From there on Rhoda captivated the attention of the fashion world and soldiered on to walking for major designers and landing several campaigns. Soon, Estee Lauder came knocking in 2007 and she won her first major beauty-advertising contract. In 2009 she made her debut in Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Edition and appeared consecutively for their 2010 and 2011 editions.
Like her counterparts, Rhoda is working on building her brand and in 2013 she named one of the highest-earning models by Forbes magazine who ranked her at number six. She hosted the live stream at 2013’s Met Ball, interviewing celebrities and designers on the red carpet while in February 2014, she went to the Super Bowl to file interviews for TV channel, Extra.
Rhoda married former NHL player Sean Avery in an intimate ceremony on October 10 of this year. The couple first started dating in 2010 and were engaged in November 2013.
