New York Fashion Week Kicks Off
Fashion Week has officially begun with the Mercedes Benz Fashion Week which kicked off today in New York.
Over the course of 8 days, more than 300 designers will showcase their Spring/Summer 2015 collections to fashionistas, buyers and critics at the New York Fashion Week which will be held at Lincoln Center and other New York venues. Nearly 230,000 people are expected to pour into the city for the event.
The week long fest kicks off the season with more than 270 back-to-back shows scheduled from morning until night with the event followed on by London and Milan, and the season concluding in Paris at the beginning of October.
The show is set to feature both Big and small names. While US designers led by Marc Jacobs and Alexander Wang will be leading the event, emerging designers from Europe, Asia, Russia and the Middle East will also look to take advantage of the opportunity to show off their work such as Russia’s Alina German and Israeli-born Daniel Silverstain. Other big names to look forward to are Proenza Schouler, Vera Wang, Michael Kors, Calvin Klein, Victoria Beckham, Rodarte, Prabal Gurung, Carolina Herrera, J. Mendel, Oscar de la Renta, Jason Wu, Altuzarra and Donna Karan.
Besides the array of Designers and models to look forward to technology will also be grabbing the spotlight at this years NYFW. Intel is said to introduce a smart bracelet, with messaging and other functions, which is expected to be sold at high-end department store Barneys New York. Ralph Lauren just launched its Polo Tech shirt, which transmits biometric data to a smart phone or tablet, while designer Tory Burch launched Fitbit jewelry this summer that tracks steps, calories and sleep cycles. Sometime soon Apple is expected to introduce a smart watch – dubbed the iWatch.
New York Fashion Week is considered the official start of the international catwalk season. The show unofficially started yesterday with a breathing show of strength and style from the performance brand Athleta, as a salute to the fashion challenges of returning US servicewomen. There was also a line up of presentations and launches, including shows by Kye and Josie Natori. Veteran designer Carolina Herrera was also honoured at a luncheon hosted by the Couture Council.
