It was a “supermodels” moment at Olympics 2012 Closing Ceremony

What do supermodels and sports have in common, you may ask? The answer is plenty. Nine British supermodels took to the catwalk at the closing ceremony clad in the best of British designs and synchronised their way to the stage through hurdles placed in their way to prove that they have athletic prowess and not just beautifully toned bodies that could rival any Olympic athlete. And then they had to contend with the sky high platform heels they wore with their outfits and if that isn’t athleticism at its best, we don’t know what is.

The models were all glad in gold and that was blinding in itself next to their beauty of course. Kate Moss wore a Sarah Burton for Alexander McQueen number, a liquid gold slinky number that was a show stealer as she sashayed across the catwalk. Naomi Campbell also wore a Steve McQueen dress, a warrior queen style wedding dress that matched her personality perfectly. Karen Elson wore Burberry, Lily Donaldson wore a sequined gown by Vivienne Westwood, Stella Tennant wore a gold, silver and bronze two-piece by Christopher Kane, Jourdan Dunn flaunted her curves in an almost gold jersey dress by Jonathan Saunders and managed to keep her 21-feathered headdress by Stephen Jones on her head as she made her way down the catwalk and that folks deserves a medal in itself. Lily Cole chose a brocade and lace knee length dress by Erdem and Georgia May Jagger flashed her gap-toothed smile in a flare-skirted dress designed by Victoria Beckham. And oh we mustn’t forget David Gandy, the one male model in the fashion extravagance par excellence who partnered Jourdan Dunn on the runway wearing a big smile on his face like the cat who had swallowed the cream. Must we wonder why?

Kudos to Lucinda Chalmers, Vogue Magazine’s fashion editor, who styled the Olympic show-stopping moment. She had this to say: “It’s incredible that Britain, such a tiny country, has such a broad range of talent in fashion, and that’s what we wanted to show. We’re known for bonkers fashion, but what I hope came across is that these designers make beautiful clothes…that people would want to wear.”

And what were the Brazilian supermodels thinking as to the display of glamour and catwalk prowess? We can only guess.
