Julien MacDonald calls Kate Moss ‘silly’ over her online skinny remark

Wales’ top designer yesterday described Kate Moss as “silly” over comments suggesting being skinny is more important than eating well.
The supermodel reportedly told an online website for women that “nothing tastes as good as skinny feels”.
But Julien Macdonald – a close friend of Moss – told the Western Mail that she had been foolish to make such a statement, and claimed she was more “round” than many of her contemporaries.
On a visit to Cardiff to launch his new Star collection of Welsh Dragon accessories, the Merthyr Tydfil-born designer said: “If you see Kate in reality she’s not so skinny.
“She’s smaller than most other models, she’s quite round – in a bikini she doesn’t look too skinny and her weight fluctuates.
Julien – who has worked with some of the world’s most beautiful women, including Cheryl Cole and Kylie Minogue, warned Moss that she should take care when making statements about size.
“The girls who buy her clothes are not all size eight, there’s a lot more girls who are sizes 12 and 14,” he said.
“If she wants her Topshop collections to be successful she has to make clothes for everybody.
“I would love to be skinny and eat all the food I love, but because I’m in the public eye I need to feel comfortable. So I watch what I eat and I exercise.
“It’s all about being happy with who you are. I think it was silly of her to say that. But she probably didn’t mean it in that context.”
Moss’ comment – which the Croydon-born 35-year-old described as one of her mottoes – has outraged campaigners battling to fight eating disorders.
Plaid Cymru AM Bethan Jenkins, chair of the Assembly’s Cross-Party Group on Eating Disorders, said she was disappointed in the comments made by the model.
She said: “It’s the kind of comment that young people in Wales could well do without. People should never judge themselves by their reflection, but they are not going to be convinced that they need help and support if people like Kate Moss continue to say it’s all right to think that way.”
Julien’s new range is sold exclusively at Debenhams and can only be bought in Wales, he said: “This is going to be the first in a long line of Welsh Dragon accessories. This collection of bags will be a one-off, so would become collectors’ items before long.”
“Hopefully in the pubs of Wales there’ll be a few people supporting the bags as well as the rugby. People are proud to be Welsh and they want to show that off – the flag is our identity. Now the fact that you can have it on a fashion item shows their support of their country.”
Julien also paid tribute to X Factor judge Cheryl Cole, for whom he has designed a number of outfits.
He said: “The Cheryl you see on The X Factor is the Cheryl you meet in real life. She’s fantastic, a working girl who’s young and beautiful but has plenty of time for everybody.”
