Claudia Schiffer has made the school run too glamorous, says Kirstie Allsopp
Any hopes of going make-up free or wearing comfortable clothes at the school gates disappeared when Allsopp discovered that Claudia Schiffer was among the other parents.
“There is a certain person whose child goes to my child’s school and I’ve never seen her looking anything but immaculate. She’s always in the press on the walk to school. It means I have to take a pull,” Allsopp said. “A friend said, ‘The photographers are not there for you,’ but they’re not going to say, ‘We won’t take your picture, Kirstie, because you rushed to school looking God-awful, harried and hot.’ They still take the odd snap.”
Although she did not mention Schiffer by name, Allsopp and Schiffer have children at the same prep school in Kensington, west London. Schiffer is regularly photographed on the school run, looking perfectly groomed in an array of designer outfits.
“As a woman in the public eye a certain degree of polish is expected. That is depressing,” Allsopp told Easy Living magazine. “No one thinks they’re pretty enough to be on a magazine cover; if they do that’s because it’s their job. My job is to present engaging television, but it’s got to the point where I have to focus on what I look like and not see that as a luxury. I find that difficult.”
Allsopp has two children with her partner, Ben Anderson, and his sons from a previous marriage live with them part-time. The daughter of Lord Hindlip, a former chairman of Christie’s, she has been tipped as a future Tory peer if the Conservatives win the next general election.
George Osborne, the Shadow Chancellor, described her as “the only Tory on TV” and she said: “I don’t shy away from saying I admire David Cameron on a personal and professional level.”
